Component SA3_2: Residential/nursing care places for over 65s

Source Denominator 2001, 2001 Ethnic, 2003: Mid year population estimate 2001, ONS

Additional details

RA Form A, Table R4 (Residential care places)
The number of residential care places was available for Unitary Authorities and Shire Counties. Data at Shire County level were population weighted and apportioned to Local Authority Districts (LAD).

Hertfordshire did not complete a return and so this figure is an estimate.

RHN Form A, Table N3 (Nursing home beds)
The number of nursing home beds was available at Health Authority (HA) level only. These figures were population weighted and attributed to the relevant LAD.

Four HAs made no return and estimates were made as below:

Authority name Estimation method
East and North Hertfordshire
West Hertfordshire
West Pennine
Figures estimated from the Self-funders Survey return
South Cheshire Figures estimated from the Autumn Position Statement data

The figure for older persons does not account for all beds for older people. Some beds that are intended for people aged 50 and over are accounted for in the category 'Other'.

Four HAs (Bradford, Merton Sutton and Wandsworth, Portsmouth and South East Hampshire, Southampton and South West Hampshire) did not specify total number of older person beds. For these authorities, the average proportion of older person beds for the appropriate region was applied to the total figure shown.

The total number of residential care places and nursing home beds were summed for each LAD.

An indirectly age-standardised ‘beds’ ratio was calculated to control for differences in the proportion of elderly in each area. The expected number of beds was derived by applying the under 65 and over 65 bed rate for England to the corresponding population aged under and over 65. A standardised bed ratio was then obtained by dividing the observed number of beds in the area by the expected number of beds and expressing this as 100. The standardised bed rate for England is 100. Figures greater than 100 indicate higher provision than the national average and figures less than 100 indicate lower provision.
